Vinay Kumar Saxena will be the new lieutenant governor of Delhi, President Ramanath Kovind’s office said on Monday. “The President of India is pleased to appoint Mr. Vinay Kumar Saxena as Lieutenant Governor of the National Capital Territory of Delhi, effective from the date he assumes his duties,” said Ajay Kumar Singh, press secretary to the President. “The resignation of Mr. Anil Baijal to the post of Lieutenant Governor of the National Capital Territory of Delhi has been approved by the President of India,” the statement said.

Baijal, the twenty-first LG in the Union Territory, resigned on May 18 citing ‘personal reasons’.

Here is a brief profile of the New Delhi LG:

(1.) Saxena is the current Chairman of the Khadi and Village Industries Commission, an organization under the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises.

(2.) He was born on March 23, 1958 and is an alumnus of Kanpur University with a pilot license.

(3.) In March 2021, he was appointed by the Central Government as a member of the National Committee commemorating 75 years of India’s independence. In November 2020, he was nominated as a member of the 2021 Padma Awards Selection Committee.

(4.) In 1984, Vinay Kumar Saxena joined the JK Group of Rajasthan as an Assistant Officer. At the group’s white cement plant in the state, he worked for 11 years in various positions.

(5.) In 1991, he founded the National Council for Civil Liberties (NCCL), a non-profit NGO with headquarters in Ahmedabad. NCCL is recognized by the Ministry of Law and Justice.

(6.) NCCL social activist Medha Patkar and her Narmada Bachao Movement (NBA) have opposed efforts to stop construction of Sardar Lake project in Gujarat.
