Protest friendship: In preparation for protests on July 21, the day Congress President Sonia Gandhi will appear before the Enforcement Directorate, the party reached out to other opposition parties asking them for solidarity. Representatives of Congress may stage a protest in Parliament while senior party leaders meet at AICC Headquarters, 24, Akbar Road.
Sources at a meeting of opposition leaders on Monday said Mallikargon Kharej and Jaram Ramesh have asked the other parties to join the July 21 protest as well as the protest against price hikes and hike in GST rates in Parliament on Tuesday. Several opposition MPs joined the protest at Gandhi’s statue on Tuesday.
change of mind: On Monday, when allies of the NDA gathered for nomination by their running mate Jagdeep Dankhar, members of the Shiv Sena rebel group (those who had joined the camp of Prime Minister Eknath Shinde) wanted to be with them.
According to the sources, the representatives of the rebel group were very keen to accompany Dhankhar while submitting the candidacy. The sources said that only when it was pointed out that escorting the NDA candidate prior to gaining recognition as a separate group in the Lok Sabha or by the Electoral Commission could be considered as a violation of the party’s directive and they may face action under the dissent law that the plan was dropped.
