An associate professor at the Hindu College of Delhi University, Ratan Lal, was arrested Friday night over his “disapproved” social media post referring to allegations of a “shifling” that was found inside the compound of the Gianvapi Mosque in Varanasi, police said.
They said that Lal was arrested under Section 153a of the Indian Penal Code (promoting hostility between different groups on the basis of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, etc., and doing acts detrimental to the maintenance of harmony) and 295a (deliberate act in order to insult religious feelings). to any class by insulting their religion) by the Internet Police Station, North.
The FIR was filed against Lal on Tuesday night based on a complaint filed by a Delhi-based lawyer.
In his complaint, attorney Vineet Jindal said Lal had recently shared an “offensive, inflammatory and provocative tweet on Shivling”.
In the complaint, he said Lal’s statement on his Twitter account was “incitement and provocation.” In his complaint, the lawyer said that the statement was published on the case of “Shifling” that was found in the compound of the Gianfabi Mosque, which is of a very sensitive nature, and the matter is pending before the court.
Defending his position earlier, Lal said, “In India, if I speak of anything, one person or the feeling of the other will be hurt. So this is nothing new. I am a historian and I have made several remarks. While writing it, I used very cautious language in my letter. And I still am. I will defend myself.”
