Counting underway for 2nd phase of urban local body polls

A polling official said that the counting of votes for the second phase of the urban local bodies elections in Madhya Pradesh started at 9 am in the state on Wednesday. Under the second stage, polling was held on July 13 in five municipal establishments, 40 carpenter palikas and 169 carpenter parshad. Elections were held on a partisan basis in these local bodies scattered in 43 districts for mayor and corporate positions. The BJP and Congress are in direct competition in Katni, Ratlam, Diwas, Rewa and Morena for mayoral and corporate positions. “Initially, postal votes will be counted, followed by votes recorded in electronic voting machines,” the polling official said.

The state’s two-stage local body elections were held for a total of 413 municipalities, including 16 Nagar Palika Nigam, 99 Nagar Palika Parishads and 298 Nagar Parishads on 6 and 13 July.

Under the first phase, polling took place in 11 Municipal Corporations, 36 Nagar Palikas and 86 Nagar Parishad. The counting for the first stage took place on 17 July.

The BJP succeeded in retaining seven of the 11 total seats in Parliament that went to the polls in the first stage, while the Congress party got three seats from the Saffron Party and the General Adami Party got one seat.

The results on Sunday were described by the Congress as “encouraging”, while the BJP praised its performance in the elections as “historic”.
