It is estimated that Covid-19 vaccines prevented approximately 1.98 crore deaths worldwide – out of 3.14 crore probable deaths – in the first year of the vaccine program, a new modeling study finds. These deaths include 42.10 lakh that were prevented in India. The study was published in The Lancet Infectious Disease.

According to a June 21 report by the Indian SARS-CoV-2 Consortium for Genomics (INSACOG), 44 Bengaluru samples submitted for genome sequencing between June 2 and June 9 were found to be infected with BA.3, BA.4 and BA. 5 subspecies of the Covid variant Omicron. This development comes after a recent report on wastewater monitoring showed the presence of BA.4 and BA.5 subspecies of Omicron in the city. On the advice of the Covid Technical Advisory Committee (TAC), the Ministry of Health on June 7 formed a Sanitation Control Evaluation Committee headed by Committee Chairman MK Sudarshan.
The largest study to date of prolonged Covid symptoms in children aged 0-14 years confirms that children diagnosed with Covid-19 can have prolonged Covid symptoms lasting at least two months. The study, published in The Lancet Child and Adolescent Health, used nationwide sampling of children in Denmark and matched Covid-19-positive cases with a control group of children with no prior history of Covid-19.
