Conduct genome sequencing of all positive Covid cases to track new variant, L-G orders citing spike

Knowing the rise in Covid cases in Delhi, LG Vinai Kumar Saxena on Monday directed officials to perform genome sequencing of all positive cases to check for any new variant. LG reviewed with Deputy Prime Minister Manish Sisodia the situation in the city.

Delhi has reported 614 new cases from 8,700 tests, and a positive rate of 7.06%, according to the health bulletin on Monday.

Saxena, who is also DDMA’s chairman, directed the health department and other concerned departments to remain “vigilant” and prepare hospital beds and other facilities for any surge. He also stressed the need for strict application of the Covid protocol such as mandatory wearing of masks in public places and maintaining social distancing.

He also directed officials to boost testing as well as focus on the “test, follow up, treat and vaccinate” strategy.

Officials were further directed to ensure the genome sequences of the reported cases in order to proactively address the spread of any new variant. LG also noted the relatively low numbers of precautionary doses that have been administered, and advised officials to take the necessary steps to enhance them through a public awareness program.”

Officials were also asked to consult experts and epidemiologists to ascertain whether a new viral strain had evolved, so that it could be treated effectively.

During the meeting, officials said, dengue and other vector-borne diseases were discussed, despite the unsuitable season for their spread. The MCD and the local breeding examiner were instructed to carry out extensive examinations and to publish photos of homes and the residents they visit, including those of mosquito breeding if they are found.

The meeting was also attended by the Special Officer, Head and Commissioner of the Ministry of Municipal and Rural Affairs and the Minister of Health and Family Welfare of the GNCTD.
