Change of Clothes Brings Change of Luck for Iga Swiatek at French Open

World number one Iga Swiatek claimed her 31st straight win to reach the round of 16 at the French Open on Saturday, thanks in part to her victory over Danka Kovinic for hastily rethinking her wardrobe.

Swiatek, the 2020 champion in Paris, was served three times by her 95th seed in Montenegro before sealing a 6-3 7-5 victory.

Kovinic recovered from a 1-4 deficit in the second set to lead 5-4, but Swiatek held the ship with a pause and a break before serving for victory.

The 20-year-old admitted that wearing a white long-sleeved shirt over her shirt wasn’t just a response to the cold temperatures at Court Philippe Chatrier.

“These are superstitions, so I don’t really believe in that. But I saw sometimes when people would change their clothes between sets and suddenly come back. I don’t know if it had something to do with the level of the game,” Swiatek said.

“I know that in Guadalajara, Arena (Sapalenka) changed her clothes when she was playing against me, and she won the next set. So I didn’t know if the outfit had won Arena but she was still playing good tennis. Some guys do.”

Her winning streak is the best of her tour since Serena Williams’ 34-game winning streak in 2013.

However, that stretch will be tested on Monday by teenage Zheng Chenwen who made her Paris debut to become the fourth Chinese player to reach the fourth round.

“I’ve heard some other guys talking about her. I’m sure she’s in the right place for her, because she plays really well,” Swiatek said.

“Even when she lost a few matches, people were saying she had talent.”
