The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday booked former Bihar Chief Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav in a new corruption case and launched searches on 17 websites linked to President Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and his family members, including daughter Misa Bharti, among others.
CBI sources said the sites were spread across Delhi, Patna and Gopalganj. The new case is based on allegations that Yadav accepted plots of land as bribes to give jobs to people when he was Union Minister for Railways in the UPA government.
The development comes weeks after Yadav I got bail in a feed fraud case. Yadav has been convicted in four feed fraud cases and faces trial in one.
Yadav and his family members are also facing trial in another alleged corruption case where he is accused of favoring a private company rather than the main land in Patna when he was Minister of Railways. Known as the IRCTC scam, Yadav has already been charged in the case. The CBI in 2018 covered the accusation of Yadav, his wife Rabri and his son Tejashwi in the case.
The agency alleged that as Minister of Railways during the UPA government, Lalo favored a company while awarding contracts to operate and maintain two IRCTC hotels. In return, his family got a prime plot of land in Patna at a discounted price from the owners of the company that signed the contract.
The agency had booked the three along with five others in July 2017, and had searched up to 12 locations, including the former Bihar chief minister’s residence in Patna.
The CBI also covered the fees for Sujata Hotels, which won the maintenance contract for IRCTC hotels, owners Vijay and Vinay Kochhar, former Union Minister and Lalu’s close associate Prem Chand Gupta and his wife Sarla, then IRCTC Group General Manager VK Asthana and RK Gogia, then Managing Director of IRCTC PK Goel and director Rakesh Saxena, and Lara Projects, a company through which the barter was allegedly arranged.
According to CBI, in 2006, Lalu Yadav as Minister of Railways allegedly favored Sujata Hotels for maintenance of two IRCTC hotels in Ranchi and Puri. In exchange, CIB claimed that Rabri and Tegashoe got prime real estate in Patna at discounted rates.
CBI stated that between 2004 and 2014, a plot was planned under which the BNR hotels of Indian Railways located in Puri and Ranchi were first transferred to IRCTC and later awarded on lease to Patna-based Sujata Hotel Pvt Ltd. maintenance and maintenance.
“Allegations that during this process, the bidding process was tampered with and tampered with and conditions were modified to assist the private party (Sujata Hotel). In return, three acres of land in West Patna were awarded to Delight Marketing – operated by Sarla and Prem Chand Gupta – At a very low cost, and then between 2010 to 2014, this land was transferred to another Lara Projects company owned by the family members Lalu Yadav,” said the CBI.
