A 24-year-old canteen worker at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras was arrested on Tuesday after a student lodged a complaint against an unidentified man who tried to sexually assault her on the campus on July 24.
In her complaint, the student said that on July 24, when she was returning to her hostel in the campus late at night, an unknown man attacked her and sexually assaulted her when she fell from his bicycle. The student said that she escaped and returned to her hostel.
Assistant Commissioner of Police C Subramanian said a case has been registered against the accused Chandra Kumar under Section 354 of the Indian Penal Code (assault with intent to outrage the modesty of a woman) and Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act.
IIT Madras said a friend of the student reported the matter two days after the incident. “The institute immediately launched an investigation, screened the camera footage and shared pictures of around 300 people who matched the description given by the student,” the IIT said in a statement on July 30. An identification parade of at least 35 people on duty was also held that night.
“The gates of IIT Madras are adequately secured and there is one security guard every 100 metres. The institute has a buddy system in place and facility to call the institute bus with security guard at odd hours.
