BJP Wins All 26 Seats in Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council

Assam’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday swept the English Karpi Independent Assembly (KAAC) elections, winning all 26 seats in the tribal group for which the poll was held on June 8.

According to the state election commission, BJP candidates won all 26 seats while Congress was second in the majority of seats.

The BJP, which contested all 26 seats, received 2,25,999 votes, the Congress party, which secured 24 seats, received 60,760 votes, and Aam Aadmi, which contested 10 seats, on 15,513 votes.

154 candidates competed in the elections, which saw a turnout of 77.96 percent of the total of 703,298 voters and saw some stray incidents of violence.

The KAAC is spread across two districts Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong and four sub-divisions Diphu, Bokajan, Howraghat and Hamren, and consists of 30 members, of whom 4 are appointed.

Prime Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma wrote on Twitter: “We bow to the people of Karpi Anglong for giving the BJP a historic mandate in KAAC polls for the second time in a row. After winning in polls conducted by Urban Authority and GMC polls, this massive victory is a true confirmation Public confidence in Adarniya Chief Minister Shri Narendra Modi ji’s vision of Sabka Saath Sabka Vishwas”.
