Biden signs $40 billion for Ukraine assistance during Asia trip | World News

President Biden on Saturday signed a law supporting Ukraine with another $ 40 billion US aid as the Russian invasion approaches its fourth month.

Legislation passed by Congress with bipartisan support will boost US commitment to Ukraine in times of uncertainty about the future of the war. Ukraine has successfully defended Kiev, and Russia has focused its aggression on the east of the country, while American officials have warned of the potential for a long conflict.

The fund intends to support Ukraine until September and dwarf an earlier emergency order that provided $ 13.6 billion.

The new legislation provides $ 20 billion in military aid, ensuring a steady stream of advanced weapons used to blunt Russian progress. $ 8 billion in general economic support, $ 5 billion to address the global food shortage that could be caused by the decline of Ukrainian agriculture and more than $ 1 billion to help homeless people.

Biden signed the move under extraordinary circumstances. A White House official said that a US official brought a copy of the bill on a commercial plane because he was in the middle of a tour of Asia, so the president could sign it.

Logistics reflects a sense of urgency about continuing US support for Ukraine, but also reflects the overlapping international challenges facing Biden. Although they are trying to reset American foreign policy to confront China, they continue to direct resources to the biggest conflict in Europe since World War II.
