Bengaluru landlord arrested for raping student from West Bengal at gunpoint

A Bengaluru businessman was arrested on Monday for allegedly raping his tenant, a 20-year-old woman from West Bengal, at gunpoint.

According to the woman, Anil Ravishankar Prasad, an undergraduate student, had made a fuss in protesting to her friends visiting her at the rented house, threatening to taint a visiting friend in a human trafficking case.

And once he locked his friend’s motorcycle and told them the police had done it, according to the woman’s complaint. “He loaned his car to leave my friend. Later he started blackmailing saying that he would inform my parents about the accident. I asked him not to do it because my father was unwell,” she said in the complaint.

Police said Prasad, who is from Bihar, runs a tile company and lives in the Karnataka state capital with his wife and children.

Police said that on April 11, when he learned that the woman was planning to vacate the house, Prasad allegedly broke into him, threatened her with his licensed pistol, and raped her.

However, the woman did not file a complaint with Ashoknagar police until later, after her parents visited her. Prasad was placed in pretrial detention for three days after his arrest.
