Army divers brought in to locate man who jumped into Sukhna Lake

A team of divers from the Army’s Special Forces Battalion were pressed into service Saturday to locate the body of a man who jumped into Lake Sukhna Friday night.

The process of locating the body started around 6:30 am today, the body was finally found at noon and handed over to Chandigarh Police.

Army assistance was called late Friday evening after the Chandigarh administration’s efforts to locate the man’s body with the help of locally-arranged divers failed to produce results. Then a request was made to the Western Command Headquarters in Chandimandir for assistance.

According to an officer in Western Command, a 26-year-old man boarded a charter boat on Friday evening, and shared it with another person. The boat with the two men rowed to the center of the lake where the man, a resident of Sahnewal, near Ludhiana, suddenly jumped into the lake.

After local efforts to find the man failed, the army’s help was called and a team of Special Forces personnel from a battalion stationed nearby were asked to move to Chandigarh around midnight.

An officer and members of 10 other ranks, including a team of divers, participated in the search process
