Amit Shah Seeks Early Probe of Rape, Sexual Assault Cases in Time-bound Manner

Federal Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday sought an early investigation into cases of rape and sexual assault against women and imposed tough penalties on the perpetrators within a specified time frame. He stated this at the twenty-fifth meeting of the Western Region Council, which was held in Diu.

An official at the Ministry of Interior said, “The Minister of Interior stressed the need for early investigation into rape and sexual crimes against women and children, and strict punishment in a time-bound manner in these cases.” Shah said the additional director general of police-level officers, if female officers can be made, should be entrusted with the responsibility of overseeing the investigation of all such cases at police headquarters in each state.

Referring to the expansion of the banking network in rural areas, the Home Minister said, as per Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision, the Postal Department will provide 20,715 direct post-payment contact points to Bank of India which will provide banking facilities in addition to regular postal services. Shah said that the co-operative banks and other banks including the Postal Payments Bank of India should ensure that every unbanked village in the western region is provided with banking facilities within 5 km within the next year.

He said countries should include schemes for all countries other than centrally sponsored schemes on the direct benefits transfer platform. The Minister of Interior said that work must be done to provide a mobile connection to all villages in the western region within a year.

He said that the cash deposit facility through shared service centers should be extended in a time-bound manner and all banks should be linked to the platform and this should be reviewed every three months. The official said the issue of water supply rates to Dadra, Nagar Haveli, Daman and Diu by Gujarat Water Supply and Sanitation Board was resolved in the board meeting.

Regional councils provide a forum for discussion in an organized manner on issues affecting one or more states or issues between the center and the states. The official said that in the past eight years under the guidance of Prime Minister Modi, the number of meetings of district councils and their standing committees has tripled.

There have been 18 meetings of various district councils and 24 of their standing committees in the past eight years, while in the corresponding period of the past eight years, only 6 and 8 meetings have been held respectively. Of the 30 topics discussed at the 25th session of the Western Regional Council, 27 were resolved leaving only three for further discussion.

It shows the government’s determination and commitment to the comprehensive development of the nation in the spirit of cooperative federalism, the official said. The official said the regional councils help develop a coordinated approach through discussion and exchange of views between countries on important issues of social and economic development, adding that regional council meetings should be used by states and union territories to share best practices. .
