Alt News co-founder Mohd Zubair sent to four-day police custody over 2018 tweet | Latest News India

Alt News co-founder Mohammed Zubair was handed over by Delhi Police on Tuesday for four days. After a day’s custody hearing, the journalist was produced before Patiala House Court Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Snigdha Sarvaria.

Zubair was arrested late Monday in a case related to an “objectionable tweet” posted against a Hindu deity in 2018.

Police said Zubair used controversial tweets in an attempt to gain fame, and other FIRs were filed against him in a number of other respects.

At first, Zubair was ‘escaping’ when asked questions and did not provide ‘necessary technical tools’ or cooperate with authorities, police said.

Zubair is reported to have refused to hand over the personal electronic devices he used in 2018 – something he may have used to post social media. Zubair’s arrest comes weeks after former BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma flagged down statements in the prophet’s controversy.

Zubair’s colleague and co-founder of Alt News, Pratik Sinha, has accused Zubair of being arrested without any notice, which is mandatory under the law for his arrest. He said no cops were wearing a name tag in the van where Zubair was being taken.
