At least seven people were injured in a major brawl in Bangladesh between rival fans in Argentina and Brazil, police confirmed Thursday.
Both the South American giants have huge followings in the South Asian country, and at times the rivalry turns violent.
Up to 300 people were involved in a brawl on Wednesday that saw fans throw stones and bricks at each other at a cricket ground outside the capital, Dhaka, Police Inspector Masoud Rana told AFP.
The officers said the clash began after a row over the strength of the two teams, with Argentina fans praising the team’s victories over Italy and Estonia in recent weeks.
Police said they have not made any arrests yet in connection with the incident.
Bangladesh is known for its die-hard cricket followers, with the national team earning a spot in the game’s best Test, one-day and T20 competitions.
But the country is also home to millions of fans of Brazil and Argentina, where football stars such as Lionel Messi and Neymar have been worshiped on equal footing with Bollywood celebrities.
During the World Cup, rival fans staged massive processions to celebrate the teams, prayed for their team’s victory and raised flags of South American nations in cities across Bangladesh to show their loyalty.
