4 Dead in Landslides Triggered by Heavy Rainfall in Meghalaya’s Garo Hills

Meghalaya Chief Minister Konrad K Sangma is likely to visit Garo Hills after four people were killed in two landslides on Thursday.

According to Superintendent of Police, South West Jarrow Hills District, Siddharth Cr. Ambedkar, “Three members of a family, a mother and her two children, were killed in a landslide which occurred in the village of Jewalgre under the Gambegre block area in the west of Jarrow Hills.” The mother has been identified as Pritish Ch Marak (38).

“During another incident in Samati village, under Petasingh, in the South West Garrow Hills, a two-and-a-half-year-old boy died when their home was destroyed in a landslide,” police said. The accident occurred at around 4 a.m. on Thursday.

Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner of South West Jarrow Hills, SK Mark, has reported that 10 villages under the Petasingh block have been damaged by the floods.

“Currently, most of the affected villages are in Petasinghe district, due to nightly heavy rains, a child died in Samati Gaon under Petasingh block in southwest Garo hills,” Mark said.

While it reported that some homes were submerged under water, DC said, “These are under the Petasingh block, assessments are underway, BDO and officials are assessing the situation and we will take necessary action accordingly. When asked, he said, “So far 10 villages have been affected so far.”
