At least 10 people were killed and 15 wounded in a Russian raid at a factory in the eastern Ukrainian city of Avdiivka, a local governor said.

“At least 10 dead and 15 wounded, as a result of the bombing of the Avdiivka Coke Factory by the Russian occupiers,” Donetsk Region Governor Pavlo Kirilenko said via Telegram.

He warned that the number of casualties could rise.

Kirilenko said the strike came because “the workers had just finished their shift and were waiting at the bus station for a bus to take them home from the factory.”

“The Russians knew where they were shooting.”

Avdiivka – an industrial city north of separatist-held Donetsk – is on the front line of the war with Russia.

The coke plant – one of Europe’s largest – has been the target of multiple attacks in recent years as Russian-backed separatist forces have been fighting Ukrainian forces.

Russia in recent weeks has increased its attacks on Kyiv-controlled territory in the eastern Donbass region, which is now the focus of its invasion of Ukraine.

Coke is a high-carbon fuel and an important industrial product, mainly used in iron ore smelting, but can also be used as a fuel in stoves and forging.
