1 in every 2 people have encountered hateful content online: Bumble Study

Did you know that one in every 2 people or 50 percent of Internet users have encountered hate content online? For female users, harassment is even more pronounced, as one in four people has witnessed at least once a week negative comments about their physical appearance and violence against women.

Forty percent of those surveyed say they have experienced online hate-based speech and bullying against a particular group or community and their physical appearance.

This online harassment is doing more harm than we think because more than half (52 percent) of people surveyed say they are angry after experiencing online hate and bullying, and 48 percent say they face online hate and bullying because they find it difficult to trust other people.

Of these, more than half of those surveyed were women. Surprising findings were made as part of a recent nationwide study by Bumble, a women-first social networking app conducted by YouGov in November 2021, which revealed how online harassment affects people across the country.

In response to growing concerns about digital security in India, particularly for women users, Bumble has partnered with Center for Social Research (CSR), a non-profit organization dedicated to creating a violence-free, gender-only society in India. To help raise awareness of digital security, and to issue a safety manual to empower its community to identify and combat online hate, bullying and discrimination.

The first version of ‘Stand for Safety’ was launched last year as part of the app’s continued global effort to help create a safer, kinder and more respected Internet. Handbook, created in conjunction with the free, open access digital resource, Nyaya, provides simple, workable information to educate people about their legal rights and ways of exercising online harassment and discrimination.

Soon, we can expect that the manual will expand its scope with guidelines translated into several Indian regional languages ​​and cater to India’s sociocultural and multi-lingual variety.

In addition to the safety manual, Bumble also offers a full suite of product features that focus on safety. The app provides users the option to block and report any person who goes against their community guidelines. People can easily access the Safety + Wellness Center Resource Center in an app built to help the community have a safe and healthy dating experience. As a geography-specific feature for the Bumble community in India, a woman can choose to use her first name only to create her bumble date profile and share her full name with contacts when she is ready and comfortable.

In 2019, the company introduced a private detector, a feature that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to automatically detect and blur unsolicited nude images. The feature then alerts recipients who choose to view, delete or report the image. Bumble has updated its Terms and Conditions to explicitly ban any unsolicited and derogatory comments made about someone’s appearance, body shape, size or health and was one of the first social networking apps to ban body shaming.
